Pharmacy spam as a news flash
G Data detects increase in abuse of topical subjects by spammers
Bochum (Germany), 4 May 2010 – Whilst an estimated amount of 3 million spam messages with subject lines about the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajoekull were circulating two weeks ago, G Data now sees exploiting topical current affairs is the new standard procedure with a specific group of spammers.
The security expert identified several subjects that have been abused by spammers that are connected to shady online pharmacies. Using these popular topics in their headlines is a tactic to avoid spam filters and grab the attention of the receiver. These spam messages seem to be sent from Russian e-mail addresses and pretend to be news letters from MSN.

Who’s behind this campaign?
Analysis of the sites these messages link to shows there are four companies behind the registration of the domains. All used domains have been registered in the last few days.

The identified domains are:

• usuallife.com
• extolbell.com
• peopleeasy.com
• flairfew.com
• sugarspoke.com
• themreply.com [offline]
• seemlychief.com [offline]

These domains have been registered by:
• China Springplank Inc (China)
• BIZCN.COM, INC (China)

Alle sites are hosted on the same server in China. However, the server changes. The G Data researchers have found two suspicious servers so far:
119.88.56.123 and 61.136.59.69.
The over 900 analysed subjects have 825 unique last words, all starting with an ‘a’ (examples marked italic in the list below). The use of lexical words at the end of a normal subject line is one countermeasure scammers implement to try to avoid anti-spam filters with the usage of harmless words.
